As a child, I learned to fall asleep to glass shattering and muffled screams as my lullaby. I experienced both the foster care systems and homelessness. This life created shame around who I was and doubt that I’d ever become successful.

One night, I broke down sobbing inside of the pickup I was sleeping in. I couldn’t handle this life anymore. A quiet voice whispered inside of me, that maybe I was meant for more.

This thought came to a screeching halt.. building a different life would be too hard.  It would be hard to pick myself up and harder to make any dream outside of the trailer park come true.

That’s when it hit me. I knew that it would be just as painful to continue to sleep in this pickup. It would be hard waking up in 30 years realizing that I had settled. I decided to pick my hard. I knew that the path to become better and the path to stay the same would both be filled with pain and so I picked my path.

I decided that to move past the life I was born into. The day I turned 18, I packed everything into that truck and drove myself to the nearest college.
